What Have You Got To Lose?

For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance.
Matthew 25:29

I wear a few hats; one of them is as a lecturer at film schools and often I get parents concerned for their children who want to go and do this unsecure career of film making or worse still - acting! They look to me wanting to hear some 'securing' words of encouragement– that the industry employs filmmakers and actors like check out operators and accountants. But you see it's not true. I have to tell them, much to their horror, that it’s a tough business and the risks are insurmountable…

The risks in living this life are insurmountable… the days of secured jobs 9-5 for 40 years and then retirement are all gone and they will never come back. Anything can happen and you don’t need a GEC to do this.

I learnt this lesson from my Father. He was working in a very comfortable job in the world of advertising back in the 80's. He was the boss and for a while there when I was around 12 (same age as my son now) life was pretty good. But then the company got taken over, the locks got changed, the car taken back and the spending account gone. My dad was in free fall; now in his mid fifties he scrambled to make it work. He set up his own ad agency and spent more time drinking wine than talking with clients and soon the house was foreclosed and my dad found himself pumping gas at the local service station.

My dad never once ever told me to take the safe path in life, because he knew too well where that leads...pumping gas.

What have you got to lose?

You may as well live this life pursuing a dream rather than taking the safe path and regretting it later…but what if it doesn’t work? Well you already know how that feels if you're asking that question – if it doesn’t work it feels like how you feel now... but what if it does? You don’t know how that feels yet…

MATTHEW 25 tells us that we are to use our ‘talents,’ not bury them. Why? Because our ‘talents’ are part of the plan God has for our lives and these talents will take us places, and in particular places in which we can impact someone or some peoples lives. You don’t know what lies ahead..

So why not TRUST God and take a step of faith and give it a go.
